Passionate Gaelic speakers required to teach the next generation

Opportunies

Not many people realise that Gaelic Medium Education (GME) has been one of the most rapidly developing sectors of Scottish education for over 23 years.

With this rapid development comes a growing demand for individuals who can teach Gaelic – as well as those qualified to teach their secondary subjects through the medium of Gaelic too.

Currently, 14 local education authorities offer GME and the Scottish Government is committed to expanding Gaelic provision across Scotland. This means there are many opportunities in:

  • Gaelic medium teaching in nursery schools and primary schools
  • Teaching Gaelic as a second language in primary schools (GLPS)
  • Gaelic medium teaching in secondary schools in a range of subjects such as Geography, Modern Studies, History, Maths, Home Economics and Science
  • Teaching Gaelic in secondary schools to fluent speakers and Gaelic medium pupils
  • Teaching Gaelic in secondary schools to learners

Existing primary school teachers have the opportunity to teach Gaelic as a second language through the Gaelic Learners in the Primary School CPD programme.

And…

  • GME requires the same supportive infrastructure as English education, so professionals such as educational psychologists, speech therapists and classroom assistants are also in demand.
