To become a secondary teacher you need to have at least 80 University credits in the subject (or subjects) you wish to teach. This is true for most subjects. That means that to teach Gaelic you should have studied Gaelic in University. 40 of these credits should be at 2nd year or above. You would then need to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
If you wish to teach another subject through the medium of Gaelic, you should study that subject at University to at least second year level.
If you don’t already have a degree, or do not have enough University credits to teach Gaelic, the other option would be to do the MA Gaelic with Education Course. This course involves studying Gaelic modules for 2 years before going on to study Education modules for two years.
Remember if you do have studied two or more subjects to a high enough level in university, you could teach those subjects in secondary school – making you more attractive to schools wishing to employ you!
Teaching courses are offered at:
The University of Aberdeen
The University of Strathclyde
The University of the Highlands and Islands
Some of the courses are offered long distance.
