Subjects to study

If your child is interested in teaching, you should advise them to study maths to at least standard grade level and English to at least Higher Level.

All teachers need to have Higher English, regardless of the stage they are teaching at and Primary teachers or a teachers working in a nursery then will need Standard Grade Maths at Credit Level (or equivalent).

Your child will need up to 4 Highers depending on which course and route to Gaelic teaching they take.

To teach in Gaelic, it might seem obvious, but fluency and literacy in the language is essential. Therefore a qualification in the language may be useful though not essential.
Even if your child is not yet fluent there are there are plenty of ways to help them to improve their language skills.  Visit the Improve your Gaelic pages for more information.
